The happiest place on… what the heck was that?

by on July 29, 2008

So, the grand master plan was as follows:

The Poppyfolk and Emmett and I would spend most of our day in the Magic Kingdom.  I bought two tickets from the Recreation Connection through PIH (Christina’s Hospital), and made arrangements to get myself a little something extra:

Yes, that’s right.  That is a Disneyland annual pass, my friends.  Let the year of a Million dreams begin.

So, we get to the park, I buy my annual pass from a nice lady from Whittier, and we head into the park.  We hit up Buzz Lightyear for fastpasses, and Mom and Dad take Emmett around for photo-ops in Toontown while I moved the car (to take advantage of my FREE PARKING).

After Toontown, we used our fastpass to go on Buzz Lightyear:

I’m (space ranger 2) clearly not trying as hard as dad (space ranger 1), but I’m clearly the better marksman.  So after that we hightail it over to Pirates of the Carribean and mom volunteers to babysit while dad and I go see the new improvements on the ride (she’d seen it already last year).  We get up to the front of the line, and we see someone get off the boat (they hadn’t gone on the ride yet).  A couple of “cast members” go over to see what’s wrong and I see one of them come over with a trash picker-upper and grab what I can only assume is a used one of these:

After they clear away the offending offense, we finally get on the ride (on the next boat, thankfully).  As we’re pulling away from the dock, I hear one cast member mumble to another, “Only in Disneyland.”  So, we get to the beginning of the ride and the skull is talking to us before the waterfall.  “… dead men tell no tales…” the skull said.  The boat went down the waterfall as it always did, but then it stopped.  A decidedly non-piratey voice says over the PA, “Due to operational difficulties, the boats have stopped.  A cast member will be by to help you momentarily.”  On come the lights and the magic of Pirates of the Carribean slowly drifts away into the spotlights.  This is what we saw:

Not very pirate-y.  Anyway, we waited for about 15 minutes until a cast member named Gail came by to help us out of the boat.  After Maria showed up, we started to disembark.  Not too much later, some firemen showed up to start unloading the other boat.  I didn’t think too much about the firemen at this point…

… but it turned out that

All the major rides (Splash Mountain, Indiana Jones, Pirates, Big Thunder, Space Mountain, Matterhorn, Tower of Terror, Toy Story Mania) were closed.  The customer service line was coming out of the town hall and extended about half the way down Main Street (that’s long).

So the long and the short of it is this.  We managed to go on two rides all day (we got on to Toy Story right after they re-opened it).  After talking to the customer service people at California Adventure later in the afternoon, mom managed to exchange the tickets that she and dad had for two park hopper passes that are good for two years.  So, today’s adventure: pretty much free.

Here’s the rest of the pictures:

Oh, and in other news:
