Compost Bin Update

19 10 2008

At long last, the weather has cooled down and I found myself with two hands free on a sunday afternoon.  Back to work!

It’s done!  I cut down the vertical braces to be level with the top, and i added screening to all of the holes on the side, so as to prevent flies from getting in.  Is it ghetto?  Yes.  Was it cheap? Yes.  Will it work? Time will tell.

I tore up all of our junk mail and put some leaves from the backyard in.  I’ll add food as we produce waste.  I’ll keep you all posted.  This could either end up very good or very bad.  Woohoo!

Compost Bin Update

13 09 2008

Armed with some new scrap wood delivered by the Poppyfolk, I was able to put more work into the bin and am almost done!

All four sides have enough slats on them now, and the cover and accompanying hinge have been assembled and installed.

Meanwhile, inside:

added fourth vertical brace, leveled off the tops and started adding the horizontal braces.  It’s pretty solid, but I’m wondering how i’m going to add horizontal pieces for the other sides without adding four more vertical pieces.

Compost Bin Update

We were in SD most of the day, so I didn’t get a whole lot done.  I added a support brace to the bottom, and I put up three of the four side pieces.  Those will probably be cut even, but right now, I’m missing the fourth corner.  Need to go scavenging for more wood.

Trying to D-I-mYself.

I’m trying to build a compost bin for all of our foodwaste.  Those of you that know us know that we had a tire composting bin in SSF that was met with limited success.  I’ve been looking up on the internet about how to build it myself using some scrap wood that the landlord has.  I think I can do it, I’ll keep everyone posted.

This is what it looks like right now:

Update, 7:45 PM. I went to Home Depot and bought a saw, some screen, and some nails.  I got a little more wood out of the landlord’s stash, and I built what I think will be the bottom of the bin.

I’d have kept working, but the sun went down precisely at the time that my drill/screwdriver ran out of juice.  I’ll be darned if I’ll be hand-turning screws in the dark.  Here’s hopin’ it works!
